Abstract

851,556. Pile driving and withdrawing. ELECTRO-HYDRAULICS Ltd. July 22, 1959 [April 25, 1958], No. 13278/58. Class 68(2). Apparatus for moving a column relative to a platform comprises a column which passes through apertures in a platform 1 and a sliding structure 4. A rocking member 8 which is pivoted to the platform at 9 has two gripping elements 10 and 11 and is connected to a similar rocking member 12, pivoted at 13, by an hydraulic jack 5. The pivoted member 8 has an arcuate slot 16 therein and the pin 17 which connects the lower end of the jack 5 to the member slides in this slot and is controlled by a secondary jack 20. The upper mounting pin 17 of the jack is similarly controlled by a secondary jack 24. An identical apparatus is shown mounted diametrally opposite that described, but two or more additional gripping devices may be used, equally spaced around the column. To lower the column relative to the platform the following procedure is adopted. Jack 24 is operated to bring the pin 22 to position C, and jack 20 to move pin 17 tp position A. The main jack is slightly extended to rotate member 8 anticlockwise and bring element 10 into engagement with the column and also rotate member 12 clockwise and bring element 15 into engagement with the column. Extension of the jack then produces upward movement of the structure 4; the element 15 sliding along the column. Pin 22 is then moved to position C and pin 17 to position B. Contraction of the jack 5 then results in the element 10 sliding over the column as it moves downwards relative to the platform.
