Abstract

1,025,822. Refrigerators. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Jan. 29, 1963 [Feb. 9, 1962], No. 3687/63. Headings F4H. A refrigeration unit is removably mounted on slides in a compartment of a refrigator cabinet and includes a duct in which an evaporator is disposed, the ends of the duct being so arranged that when the unit is positioned in the compartment they communicate with air-flow passages formed in the cabinet walls. As shown, a refrigeration unit 16 carried by a base frame 45 is disposed in a compartment 15 beneath the storage compartment of a refrigerator cabinet and includes a duct 46 in which are disposed an evaporator 47 and fan 49. Rollers 60 are mounted at the rear of the sides of unit 16 and rails 64 are secured along the sides of compartment 15, the rails having ramps 67 (Fig. 5, not shown), at the rear so as to raise the rear of the unit when the latter is completely inserted into the compartment. The front of the unit is then raised and the unit is secured in a horizontal position by bolts 72 passing through frame 45 and rails 64. The raising of the unit brings the inlet and outlet openings 52, 53 of duct 46 into register with the ends of passages 39, 25 formed in the walls of the cabinet, the openings 52, 53 being surrounded by raised portions 54, 55 which mate with corresponding recesses 41, 27 formed around the ends of passages 39, 25. Gaskets 42, 29 are provided. Air discharged into passage 25 is supplied through a passage 20 in the rear wall of the cabinet to a freezer compartment (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown), disposed above the storage compartment and thence to the storage compartment from which it is returned to unit 16 via passage 39. The freezer compartment may alternatively be located below the storage compartment (Fig. 9, not shown).
