Abstract

910,551. Refrigerators. HUSSMANN REFRIGERATOR CO. June 22, 1961 [July 15, 1960], No. 22616/61. Class 29. A refrigerator is provided with alternately operable air-cooling and moving means. In a refrigerator cabinet of the open front display type having a storage space 29, air is extracted from the said space through ducts 74 and 75 containing evaporators 66, 67 and fans 64, 65 and the evaporator and fan in each duct are alternately operable, defrosting of each evaporator being effected during its appropriate inoperative period. Cooled air from the duct containing the operative fan and evaporator is supplied to a rear duct 40 and thence to the storage compartment while a small amount of air flows in a reverse direction through the duct containing the inoperative fan and evaporator. This reverse air flow meets and joins the main air flow into the operative duct at the entrance to the ducts 74 and 75 so that excess moisture in the vicinity of the inoperative evaporator is removed and deposited on the operative evaporator. The arrangement ensures that moist air is not supplied to the storage space when the previously inoperative fan and evaporator are started, after defrosting of the latter. In the modifications of Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 (not shown), the duct may be shaped to form heat traps in the vicinity of the evaporators which may be placed in staggered relationship as may the fans, and master fans may be placed at the base of the rear duct 40. In Fig. 7 (not shown), the invention is applied to an open-front display case having a larger rear refrigerated storage space. Centrifugal blowers may be used in place of the propeller type fans and electric heaters and drainage channels are provided for depositing, the heating means only being operated after an extended evaporator idling period.
