Abstract

995,892. Refrigerators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 26, 1962 [Oct. 11, 1961], No. 36540/62. Heading F4H. In a forced air refrigerator having a fresh food compartment and a freezer compartment cooled by a single evaporator, the humidity of air drawn from the fresh food compartment is reduced by passage over a section of the evaporator before this air is passed, with air from the freezer compartment, over the main section of the evaporator, thus preventing rapid frosting of the main section of the evaporator. As shown, the evaporator unit 3 comprises a housing 6 divided by a wall 23 into first and second chambers 24 and 25 respectively, the wall 23 stopping short of the bottom 27 of the housing to provide an interconnecting passage 28. A tube evaporator 5 within the lower portion of the housing lies partly in chamber 24, and partly in chamber 25, both sections having vertical fins which extend between the front and rear walls of the housing 6, the fins 31 in chamber 24 being more widely spaced than the fins 33 in chamber 25. A refrigerant accumulator 35 lies above the evaporator in the chamber 24. Air from the fresh food compartment, not shown, enters the top of chamber 24 through an inlet 20 and passes over the first section of the evaporator, most of its moisture being deposited thereon as frost. The air passes through the opening 28 and over the main portion of the evaporator in chamber 25, in company with air from the freezer compartment 1 which enters the lower part of chamber 25 through a slot 9. The cooled air passes from the housing 6 to a centrifugal fan 7 and thence by ducts 15 and 16 to the freezer compartment and the fresh food compartment respectively. The evaporator unit may be located at any convenient point in the refrigerator cabinet, and may be defrosted periodically by any suitable means.
