Abstract
1,137,147. Refrigerators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 10 May, 1966 [12 May, 1965], No. 20585/66. Heading F4H. A two-compartment refrigerator comprises a fan 12 which draws air from the freezer compartment 1 through a louvred inlet 15 and from the storage compartment 2 through inlets 22, an evaporator 9 over which the air is drawn by the fan, an outlet 24 to compartment 2 for a minor portion of the cooled air, and a tunnel 17 which receives the major portion of the cooled air and supplies the air to compartment 1 through side and front outlets 19, 20. Tunnel 17 accommodates one or more ice trays 18. The evaporator has an electric defrost heater disposed in slots 47 in its fins, the heater being energized by a timer (not shown) and de energized by a temperature responsive switch 65. A drain 49 for defrost water communicates with a channel 48 which discharges on to the rear wall of compartment 2, the bottom of which has a drain 52 communicating with the machinery compartment 6. It is stated that excessive frost formation on the leading edges of the evaporator fins is prevented by increasing the length of the fins upstream of the first pass of the evaporator coil so that their edges are at a relatively high temperature. Alternate fins may terminate on the downstream side of the first pass of the evaporator coil.
