Abstract

1,020,156. Loud-speakers. PLESSEY U.K. Ltd. Aug. 17, 1964 [Aug. 23, 1963], No. 33456/63. Heading H4J. A loud-speaker magnet assembly includes a hollow cylindrical magnetic yoke 10 open at one end only, a permanent magnet 11 extending within the yoke 10 from the closed end towards the open end, the magnet 11 being provided with a skirted cap 12 of magnetic material which embraces the end of the magnet 11 adjacent the open end of the yoke and the skirt 12b of which has a peripheral outwardly-extending lip 12c which is engaged by a non-magnetic centring structure 16 retaining the magnet 11 centred within the yoke 10. The yoke 10 is of die-cast ferrous metal and the skirted cap 12 is of ferrous metal. The centring ring 16 is of brass and is of convoluted cross-section. It is held under axial compression with its outer edge held between a top-plate 14, forming an outer polepiece, and the lip of a recess 15 in the yoke 10. Alternatively, the centring ring 16 is a good sliding fit in the yoke 10. In an alternative construction (not shown), the cap 12 is formed by punching or drawing sheet metal, the magnet lip pole-piece corresponding to portion 12a being formed by an additional polepiece of ferrous metal which lies on the face of magnet lip portion 11a and is embraced by the cap. The additional polepiece may be disc-shaped or annular; in the latter construction the cap may have the greater part of its plane end face removed so as to leave an annular lip embracing the periphery of the additional polepiece.
