Abstract

Porous clutch linings or brake lining elements are made by mixing 66 to 85% steel fibres, coated with 0.8 to 1.2% oil, with 15 to 34% dry phenolformaldehyde resin, initially curing the mixture in a closed mould and completing the curing in an oven. The preferred mixture is 72% steel, 28% resin, and the fibres may be 0.003 inches in diameter and 1/32 to 1/4 inches long. The edges of elements may be reinforced by a mixture containing up to 40% resin. The steel mould may be pressed and heated to 500 DEG F between heated platens, whereby volatiles are retained in the mould, for 2.5 minutes; the element may thereafter remain in the opened mould for one minute and is then removed from the mould and cured at 400 DEG F for 15 minutes in the oven.
