[Also in Division E1] A unitary glass fibre reinforced polyester manhole bottom 11, having an interior shape comprising a main open conduit 12 into which may merge one or more open inlet conduits 14, and with semi-annular recesses 19 for pipe jointing, and having also an outwardly projecting flange 17 for building into the manhole brickwork, is moulded by applying to a former, configured to the interior manhole shape and flange, a gel coat of polyester resin, including a thixotropic powder or paste, which is hardened to a tacky consistency prior to applying thereto one or more coats of a polyester resin, including benzol peroxide or methylethylketone catalyst and cobalt accelerator, into which is then forced a sheet of flexible glass fibre, e.g. by pressure of either a manually operated roller, or an opposed forming surface, or a press platen urged inflated rubber bag. The manhole bottom is moulded with the walls thereof closing the ends of the channels, which are opened by cutting during installation. The former may be of wood, and the manhole bottom moulded thereon may also be used to produce further formers of glass fibre reinforced resin similarly applied thereto. The glass fibre may comprise a felted sheet impregnated with a polyester emulsion binder, or a woven cloth treated with heat and pressure to effect fibre binding and preferably also preimpregnated with a chemical binder. Curing may be completed, after removal from the former, at ambient temperatures, e.g. 65‹ F., or at elevated temperatures, e.g. up to 160‹ F.
