Abstract
1485852 Producing casting moulds A WITTMOSER 16 Oct 1974 [19 Oct 1973] 44815/74 Heading B5A A casting mould is produced by coating the surface of a pattern of the article to be formed in the mould, embedding the coated pattern in granular moulding material and consolidating the moulding material by subjecting it to subatmospheric pressure, the coating remaining as part of the mould after removal of the pattern. As shown, the pattern 4b is placed on plate 4a and surrounded by container 1. Coating 3a is applied to the pattern, e.g. by dipping, spraying or painting and the exposed surface of plate 4a and the container filled with granular material 6. After applying a sealing coating 3b, e.g. of the same material as coating 3a, to the moulding material 6, a subatmospheric pressure is drawn through conduits 2. The pattern 4b and plate 4a may then be withdrawn as shown in Fig. 2, the coating 3a forming part of the mould. The coating material may be a cold- or hot-setting material, inorganic or organic, e.g. which may be graphitized by heating, e.g. polystyrene or polyethylene, and is preferably a closed-cell foam material, and may be applied as dry material by magnetic or electrostatic deposition, e.g. talc, carbon, ferric oxide, magnetic iron oxide, zircon or chromite or in a moist or uncured condition, being dried or cured after embedding the pattern in the moulding material.
