Abstract
Asbestos compositions of porosity at least 35% and preferably 40-65% are prepared by mixing asbestos fibres with a friction-enchancing material and a solution of an uncured resin, to give a pasty consistency, evaporating the solvent to give a porous mass, and finally curing the resin. Specified resins are oil-modified phenolic resins which may be dissolved in ethanol which may be evaporated by heating the material at 130 DEG F. for 3 hours. Specified friction-enhancing materials are barytes and polymerized cashew nut shell resins. The pasty composition may be applied to an adhesive-primed steel reinforcing member before drying and curing, or else may be formed into a sheet before drying, which dried sheet may be applied to an adhesive-primed reinforcing member before curing. Specified curing temperatures are about 350-360 DEG F. One method of making the pasty composition uses suction over a filter medium to felt the fibres and remove excess solvent. The cured products are used as friction pads for clutches and the like.ALSO:Asbestos compositions of porosity at least 35% and preferably 40-65% are prepared by mixing asbestos fibres with a friction-enhancing material and a solution of an uncured resin, to give a pasty consistency, evaporating the solvent to give a porous mass, and finally curing the resin.
