Abstract

Artificial resins are raised to high temperatures, approximating to their hardening temperatures, before being charged at great speed under pressure into moulds. At the charging temperature the material is in a fluid or semi-fluid state and the charging is performed by spraying or injection through short narrow feed passages heated preferably to above the hardening temperature of the material. The residual heat in the charge, together with the heat due to friction and compression, is usually sufficient to complete the hardening without separate heating of the mould, thus enabling non-metallic moulds to be used and to be heat-insulated. Wood, gypsum and asbestos-cement are suggested as examples of mould materials, or these substances may be used with a metal lining. The moulds may, however, be made of metal and heated separately.
