[Class 87 (ii)] Compressed bodies are produced from thermosetting artificial resins, particularly of the pheno- or amino-plastic types, by preheating the material outside the mould and without the use of pressure to a temperature over 100‹ C. until the maximum plasticity is reached, whereupon the material is placed in the mould and hardened under heat and pressure. The material is preferably heated between metal plates. The material may be in pulverulent or tablet form or may comprise pieces of fabric impregnated with resin. A curve is given showing the preheating periods required to produce maximum plasticity for different preheating temperatures from 100 to 140‹C., the plasticity being measured by the penetration of a steel ball. In the case of tablets, it is found that there is a maximum thickness of tablet permissible for a given temperature in order to ensure uniform heating throughout the tablet and a curve is given showing the dependance of the maximum tablet thickness on the preheating period and temperature. Heat penetration was measured by piercing a tablet and inserting a thermo-element.
