Abstract

1318391 Moulding plastic substances DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 19 April 1971 [4 May 1970] 21346/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division D2] A shaped resin impregnated carbon fibre paper article is made by manipulating a resin impregnated carbon fibre paper to conform to a mandrel or mould before cold cure at room temperature has taken place, cold curing, and removing the shaped article from the mandrel or mould. The carbon fibre paper is first impregnated with a hot curing resin mix, pre-cured by limited application of heat, and then impregnated with a cold setting resin mix. The hot mix may comprise an epoxy, phenolic, polyimide, or Friedel-Crafts resin with appropriate hardener, and the cold mix may comprise an epoxy, polyester, furane, resorcinol-formaldehyde, or ureaformaldehyde resin with appropriate hardener. The examples describe the preparation of tubular, hemispherical, and corrugated articles. These articles may be strengthened by the inclusion of lengths of carbon fibre.
