Abstract
859,067. Moulding reinforced plastic pipe. BABBITT PIPE CO. Inc. Nov. 17, 1958, No. 36925/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] Fibrous material impregnated with thermosetting resin is formed into a pipe, the fibres being aligned primarily circumferentially, heated to cure the resin while simultaneously compressed by the outward radial pressure of a diaphragm, the pressure being sufficient to stretch the fibrous material circumferentially and to compact it to a point where the resin transmits throughout the material a fluid pressure in excess of the vapour-pressure at the curing temperature of any volatiles present. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 a tubular diaphragm 10 is placed about a mandrel 12, followed by a thin layer of "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark) upon which are wrapped layers 16 of, for example, kraft paper impregnated with phenol formaldehyde resin. A bead 36 of resin may be placed on the inner surface of each strip of paper to act as a lubricant between layers. After a further layer 18 of Cellophane has been applied, the wrapped mandrel is inserted in a mould 20, the combination is placed in an oven 32, and compressed air, e.g. at 2000 p.s.i., is injected through an opening 34. Gas trapped in the mould may be bled off by means of small orifices 35. By suitable modification of the apparatus, a widened end to the pipe to form a coupling connection, screw threads at the ends of the pipe, or a pipe in the form of a T- member, may be formed.
