Abstract

938,288. Moulding resin-fibre tubes. STUDEBAKER-PACKARD CORPORATION. May 18, 1961, No. 18087/61. Class 87(2). A thermosetting resin-impregnated laminated tubular preform is inserted in a mould and the resin set whilst the preform is compressed radially and subjected to longitudinal tension. Radial compression is applied to the perform 24 in the mould 10 by a bladder 54 inflated by hydraulic fluid, whilst longitudinal tension is applied by clamping one end of the preform to a fixture 18 and the other end to a movable member 26 which is drawn away from the fixture 18 by a hydraulic cylinder and piston device. The resin is set by passing heated fluid such as superheated steam through bores (not shown) in the mould 10. The laminated preform may consist of glass fibre impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde resin.
