Abstract

A pipe or other hollow article is moulded from reinforcing fibres and a synthetic resin, e.g. a polyester, phenol-formaldehyde, epoxy or furnace resin, by placing the reinforcement on an expansible mandrel, introducing the mandrel into a mould, impregnating the fibres with the resin before introduction into the mould, expanding the mandrel to force the fibres into engagement with the mould, and contracting and removing the mandrel either before or after the resin has been cured. In a centrifugal process, the mandrel and reinforcement are introduced into a mould, and the mould rotated rapidly, the resin cured, and the mandrel removed before rotating the mould in which case the mandrel is either expanded to force the reinforcement against the mould or the inside of the mould is coated with a resin to act as an adhesive for the reinforcement. The mandrel may be (a) an inflatable rubber container, (b) a rubber cylinder having a screw threaded metal rod passing through a bore in the container and having a nut at each end for expanding or contracting the container or (c) a split cylinder provided with a longitudinally movable tapered plug. The reinforcing fibres may be of glass, nylon or sisal and may be in the form of a nap, spirally wound strip or loose roving. Specification 771,833 is referred to.
