Abstract
924,117. Making pressure-vessels ; altering physical properties. REINHOLD ENGINEERING & PLASTICS CO. Inc. Jan. 1, 1962, No. 24/62. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of cold-working materials, e.g. steel, aluminium, copper and thermoplastics such as polyvinyl chloride for use in rocket, guided missiles and aircraft comprises affixing a second material to a ductile material which is to be cold-worked to form a composite structure, stressing the structure beyond the yield strength of the ductile material, the second material preventing localized deformation as the ductile material is stressed past its yield point, and relieving the stress on the structure. In an embodiment the material to be coldworked is a plain carbon steel cylinder 12 and the second material comprises a reinforced glass sleeve 14 formed on the outside of the steel cylinder. The glass sleeve is formed by winding resin - impregnated glass filaments around and disposing them longitudinally of the steel cylinder and then embedding them in epoxy resin which is cured in an oven. Apparatus for cold-working the composite structure comprises a steel base plug 22 having an external support flange 24 for the structure 10. A resilient plug 26 is fixed to the base plug and is accommodated within the structure supported by the flange 24. An upper steel plug 28 resting on the rubber plug 26 is forced downwardly to compress the plug 26 which stresses the structure 10 beyond the yield point of the inner steel cylinder 12. For stressing an enclosed structure, e.g. a sphere, oil or water under pressure is used. After the desired amount of work hardening has been accomplished the load is released and the structure is ready for use as a high-pressure vessel in pipelines, rocket shells and the like either in its composite state or with the outer shell stripped off. The composite structure has one layer in tension and the other in compression.
