Abstract

1,249,980. Composite articles. DEFENCE, SECRETARY OF. 18 March, 1969 [22 Dec., 1967], No. 58365/67. Heading B5A. A composite article is formed by inserting a mixture of thermosetting resin and reinforcement at a push-fit in a heat-shrinkable plastics tube and heating the assembly to cure the resin and shrink the tube. The plastics tube may be stripped off or left on as part of the article as desired. Formers coated with parting agent may be inserted into the tube to provide articles of varying section. Mandrels e.g. of aluminium, may be inserted into the tube to provide a core. The thermosetting resin may be peroxide catalysed unsaturated polyester resins, phenolic resins, epoxy resins, polyimides or Friedel-Crafts type resins. The reinforcement may be fibrous, e.g. glass fibre or carbon fibre. The heat-shrinkable tube may be polyester, polyvinyl chloride, silicone rubber or biaxially stretched polypropylene. In one embodiment, a fibrous mat is partially impregnated with partially-cured resin; rolled up and pushed into the tube which is heated. Rolling up is preferably effected on an axis which is substantially parallel to the direction of fibre orientation.
