Abstract
A bi-metal piston comprises a magnesium alloy body provided with an aluminium alloy element cast thereagainst at one or more of the areas where corrosion and/or wear is likely to occur. The composition of the body may be, in percentages, either (a) Ag 2.0-3.0; rare earth metals 2.0-3.0; Zr 0.4-1.0; Zn 0.2; Mn 0.15; Cu 0.03; Si 0.01; Fe 0.01; Ni 0.005; remainder magnesium, or (b) Th 2.5-4.0; Zr 0.5-1.0; Mn 0.15; Zn 0.3; impurities 0.3; remainder magnesium. The composition of the cast element may be, in percentages, Cu 0.5-1.3; Mg 0.8-1.5; Si 11.0-13.0; Fe 0.8; Mn 0.5; Ni 0.7-2.5; Zn 0.1; Pb 0.1; Sn 0.1; Ti 0.2; remainder aluminium.
