Abstract

PURPOSE: To develop a free-cutting Al alloy without reducing corrosion-resistance, anodized film formation property and antipeeling property of film by adding rare earth elements or Misch metal to an Al-Mg-Si-Pb-Sn alloy.
CONSTITUTION: The object Al alloy contains, in addition to Mg and Si required to form 0.6W2.0% of intermetallic cpd. of Mg2Si, excessive Si: 0.2W1.0%, Cu: 0.1W0.5%, rare earth element or Misch metal: 0.05W0.6%, Ti: 0.01W0.2%, Pb: 0.4W1.6%, Sn: 0.4W1.2%, either one of Mn: 0.1W0.5% or Cr: 0.1W0.5%. The intermetallic cpd. Mg2Si is effective for age hardening; and excessive Si enhances strength and free-cutting ability of the alloy. Added Cu improves strength and free-cutting ability of the alloy. Added Cu improves strength and heat working properties; and adding rare earth element or Misch metal drastically enhances cutting ability. Ti prevents case cracking; and Pb and Sn also enhance cutting ability.
