Abstract

1,007,433. Knitting. WILLIAM COTTON Ltd. Oct. 23,1961 [Oct. 28, 1960], No. 37047/60. Heading D1C. On a straight bar knitting machine in continuation of rib fabric, a strip of non-rib fabric is produced on the frame needles 1 while retaining the loops on the machine needles 2 and then a strip of plain fabric is produced on the machine needles 2 while retaining the loops on the frame needles 1 after which the rib fabric is continued. As shown, ribbed collars are knitted continuously with transverse tubes at intervals and incorporating draw threads DT and some waste courses in the rib fabric following a tube. Collar lengths are separated by removing draw threads DT, the rib fabric is unravelled to separate the strips and the collar is attached to the garment. Material beyond draw threads DT1 and DT2 is then removed. The strip on the frame needles is knitted by maintaining the machine needles 2 out of action while the strip on the machine needles is knitted by feeding yarn to the sinkers 3 which sink the yarn on to the frame needles 1 which are lowered and the beards are pressed. The knock over bits 5 are lowered out of action so the yarn is not knitted but falls from sinkers 3 on to the needles 2 which knit the yarn. The machine is then operated as for knitting a course but no yarn is fed and the beards of the machine needles 2 are not pressed so that the loops from the previous course are cast off. The frame needles 1 but retained on the machine needles 2. This operation is repeated to return the slur cocks to the end of the machine adjacent the yarn carrier. The collar may be fashioned as described in Specification 933, 593 and knitting may be started up as described in Specification 1, 000, 292.
