Abstract
L'invention propose une graisse lubrifiante constituée de : une combinaison d'huile de base comprenant 10-35 % d'une ou plusieurs poly (alpha-oléfines), 3-15 % d'un ou plusieurs esters organiques synthétiques, 20-30 % d'une ou plusieurs huiles naphténiques, et pour le reste d'une ou plusieurs huiles paraffiniques, les pourcentages étant en poids de la combinaison d'huile de base totale, et le rapport pondéral ester (s) / poly (alpha-oléfine) (s) dans la combinaison ne dépassant pas 1/ 3; 2-15 %, en poids de la graisse totale, d'un épaississant savon de lithium; 1-5 %, en poids de la graisse totale, d'un dithiophosphate de molybdène; 1-5 %, en poids de la graisse totale, d'un dialkyltidhiophosphate de zinc; 15 %, en poids de la graisse totale, d'un agent modifiant le frottement exempt de soufre; et tout ou partie des additifs pour graisse normaux, tels qu'antioxydants, inhibiteurs de corrosion, additifs extrême pression et agents de pégosité.

La présente invention concerne une graisse lubrifiante qui est destinée principalement être utilisée dans des joints universels à double cardan qui sont utilisés dans les transmissions de véhicules à moteur.
Les mouvements de composants à l'intérieur des joints à double cardan (JDC) sont complexes avec une combinaison de roulement, de glissement et de rotation.
Quand les joints sont soumis à un couple, les composants sont chargés ensemble, ce qui peut provoquer non seulement une usure sur les surfaces de contact des composants, mais également une fatigue par contact roulant et des forces de frottement significatives entre les surfaces. L'usure peut conduire à une défaillance des joints et les forces de frottement peuvent engendrer du bruit, des vibrations et des sons stridents (NVH pour Noise, Vibration and Harshness) dans la transmission. On "mesure" normalement les NVH en déterminant les forces axiales générées dans les JDC du type plongeant. Dans l'idéal, les graisses utilisées dans des joints à double cardan doivent non seulement réduire l'usure, mais aussi avoir un faible coefficient de frottement pour réduire

les forces de frottement et pour réduire ou empêcher les NVH.
Les joints à double cardan ont aussi des protections de scellement en matériau élastomère qui ont habituellement la forme d'un soufflet, une extrémité étant raccordée à la partie extérieure du JDC et l'autre extrémité à l'arbre d'interconnexion ou de sortie du JDC.
Le soufflet retient la graisse dans le joint et maintient à l'écart la saleté et l'eau.
La graisse non seulement doit réduire l'usure et le frottement et empêcher l'initiation prématurée d'une fatigue par contact roulant dans un JDC, mais aussi elle doit être compatible avec le matériau élastomère constituant le soufflet, car sinon il y a une dégradation du matériau de soufflet qui provoque une défaillance prématurée du soufflet, laissant la graisse s'échapper et finalement rendant défectueux le JDC. Les deux types principaux de matériau utilisé pour les soufflets de JDC sont un caoutchouc de polychloroprène (CR) et un élastomère thermoplastique copolymère séquence éther/ester (TEEE).
Des graisses pour JDC typiques ont des huiles de base qui sont des mélanges d'huiles minérales naphténiques (cycles saturés~) et paraffiniques (chaînes saturées linéaires et ramifiées). On peut aussi ajouter des huiles synthétiques. On sait que ces huiles de base ont une grande influence sur la détérioration (gonflement ou rétrécissement) des soufflets en CR. Toutes les huiles de base minérales et synthétiques extraient les plastifiants et d'autres agents protecteurs dans les matériaux de soufflet en caoutchouc. Les huiles minérales paraffiniques et les huiles de base synthétiques en

poly(a-oléfine) (PAO) diffusent très peu dans le CR, provoquant un rétrécissement, mais d'autre part les huiles minérales naphténiques et les esters synthétiques diffusent dans le CR et agissent comme des plastifiants et peuvent provoquer un gonflement. Les plastifiants utilisés dans les CR utilisés pour les soufflets ont typiquement des points d'écoulement inférieurs à -50 C et ceci confère au CR de bonnes propriétés à basse température. Les huiles minérales naphténiques utilisées dans les graisses pour JDC ont un point d'écoulement qui est typiquement aux alentours de -35 C, bien que cela puisse dépendre de la viscosité et du procédé de raffinage des huiles naphténiques. Le remplacement de l'huile minérale naphténique par un ou plusieurs plastifiants caoutchouteux peut par conséquent réduire significativement la performance du caoutchouc aux basses températures et peut provoquer une défaillance des soufflets en caoutchouc par fissuration à froid, résultant finalement à une défaillance du JDC. S'il se produit un gonflement ou un ramollissement significatif, l'aptitude aux hautes vitesses maximale du soufflet est réduite du fait de la médiocre stabilité à la vitesse et/ou d'une dilatation radiale excessive.
L'addition d'un plastifiant à une huile de base de graisse est efficace pour maintenir la performance à basse température du CR mais a les effets nuisibles suivants : 1. elle augmente le changement de volume du CR après vieillissement ; et 2. elle réduit la viscosité d'huile de base et donc augmente le frottement et l'usure et peut favoriser la fatigue par contact roulant dans le JDC.

L'objet de l'invention est de proposer une graisse lubrifiante, principalement pour JDC, ayant une bonne compatibilité avec les matériaux de soufflet en CR et conférant également une faible usure et un faible frottement tout en empêchant l'initiation prématurée de la fatigue par contact roulant dans le joint.
Selon l'invention, on propose une graisse lubrifiante composée de : a. une combinaison d'huile de base comprenant 10 à 35 % d'une ou plusieurs poly(a-oléfines), 3 à 15 % d'un ou plusieurs esters organiques synthétiques, 20 à
30 % d'une ou plusieurs huiles naphténiques, le reste de la combinaison étant constitué d'une ou plusieurs huiles paraffiniques, les pourcentages étant en poids de la combinaison d'huile de base totale et le rapport du poids du ou des esters dans la combinaison au poids de la ou des poly(a- oléfines) s'y trouvant n'étant pas supérieur à 1/3 (de préférence environ 1/4), b. entre 2 et 15 % en poids, par rapport à la graisse totale, d'un épaississant de type savon de lithium ; c. entre 1 et 5 % (de préférence entre 1 et 2 %) en poids, par rapport à la graisse totale, d'un dithiophosphate de molybdène répondant à la formule générale suivante :

ayant entre 1 et 24 atomes de carbone ou un groupe aryle ayant entre 6 et 30 atomes de carbone ; d. entre 1 et 5 % (de préférence entre 1 et 2 %) en poids, par rapport à la graisse totale, d'un dialkyltidhiophosphate de zinc répondant à la formule générale suivante : (R50) (R60) SP-S-Zn-S-PS (OR7) (OR') dans laquelle R5 à R8 inclus peuvent être identiques ou différents et représentent chacun un groupe alkyle primaire ou secondaire ayant de 1 à 24 et de préférence de 3 à 8 atomes de carbone ; e. entre 1 et 5 % (de préférence entre 1 et 2 %) en poids, par rapport à la graisse totale, d'un agent modifiant le frottement exempt de soufre ; et f. tout ou partie des additifs pour graisse normaux tels que des antioxydants, des inhibiteurs de corrosion, des additifs extrême pression, et des agents de pégosité.
On a trouvé que l'utilisation de la combinaison d'huile de base susmentionnée, conjointement avec l'incorporation du dithiophosphate de molybdène (MoDTP), du dialkyldithiophosphate de zinc (ZDTP), et de l'agent modifiant le frottement exempt de soufre, donne une graisse qui a significativement moins d'effet nuisible sur le matériau en CR des soufflets, et qui confère des propriétés d'usure et de frottement toutes deux très bonne, empêche l'initiation d'une fatigue par contact roulant et réduit les forces axiales dans un JDC du type plongeant.
Les esters synthétiques organiques préférés sont des dérivés d'acide dicarboxylique avec des sous-groupes à base d'alcools aliphatiques. De préférence, l'acide

dicarboxylique est l'acide sébacique et les alcools ont des chaînes carbonées primaires, droites ou ramifiées ayant de 2 à 20 atomes de carbone. Par conséquent, l'ester synthétique préféré est le sébaçate de dioctyle (DOS), mais on peut aussi utiliser l'adipate de dioctyle (DOA) , le phtalate de dioctyle (DOP) ou l'azélate de dioctyle (DOZ), qui sont également utilisés en tant que plastifiants dans les matériaux de soufflet en CR.
De préférence, l'agent modifiant le frottement exempt de soufre est un complexe organique du molybdène, de préférence un complexe d'un amide organique comme décrit par exemple dans le document US 4 889 647.
Le dithiophosphate de molybdène peut être du phosphorodithioate d'oxymolybdène-2-éthylhexyle sulfurisé et le dialkyldithiophosphate de zinc peut être un mélange d'alkyldithiophosphates primaires et secondaires dont les chaînes carbonées ont entre 3 et 14 atomes.
L'épaississant peut être un savon de lithium simple formé à partir d'acide stéarique, d'acide 12hydroxystéarique ou d'autres acides gras similaires ou leurs mélanges, ou d'esters méthyliques de ces acides. En variante, on peut utiliser un savon complexe de lithium formé, par exemple, à partir d'un mélange d'acides gras à longue chaîne conjointement avec un agent complexant, par exemple un borate' ou un ou plusieurs acides dicarboxyliques. L'utilisation de savons de lithium complexes permet à la graisse d'être opérationnelle jusqu'à une température d'environ 180 C, tandis qu'avec des savons de lithium simples, la graisse ne va être opérationnelle que jusqu'à une température d'environ 120 C.

La graisse peut comprendre entre 0,5 et 3,0 % en poids d'un sel sulfonate de calcium servant d'inhibiteur de corrosion. Typiquement, la dernière opération avant assemblage d'un JDC est un lavage pour éliminer les débris d'usinage, et il est par conséquent nécessaire que la graisse absorbe toutes les traces d'eau restante et empêche cette eau de provoquer une corrosion et d'affecter négativement la performance du JDC.
La graisse peut aussi comprendre entre 0,10 et 3,0 % en poids d'un additif extrême pression contenant du soufre et du phosphore mais exempt de métal, ayant une teneur en soufre située dans la plage allant de 15 à 35 % en poids et une teneur en phosphore située dans la plage allant de 0,5 à 3,0 % en poids, et qui présente d'excellents effets d'inhibition de l'usure et de prévention de grippage des JDC. Si la teneur en phosphore dépasse la limite supérieure définie ci-dessus, ceci peut avoir un effet néfaste sur le matériau de soufflet. Si la teneur en soufre dépasse la limite supérieure définie cidessus, elle peut favoriser l'initiation d'une fatigue par contact roulant des composants métalliques venant au contact.
La graisse peut comprendre entre 0,1 et 2,0 % en poids d'un antioxydant pour inhiber la dégradation par oxydation des huiles de base et pour prolonger la durée de vie de la graisse et, en résultat, prolonger la durée de vie du JDC. L'antioxydant peut être une amine, de préférence une amine aromatique qui peut être la phényla-naphtylamine ou la diphénylamine ou un de leurs dérivés.
Afin de déterminer l'effet de différentes huiles sur la détérioration de matériaux en caoutchouc, on immerge

complètement des éprouvettes d'un caoutchouc en polychloroprène standard pour JDC dans différents composants d'huile de base pour graisse, pendant 70 heures à 120 C. On détermine les changements de dureté Shore A (#H) et de volume (#V %) des éprouvettes en caoutchouc après vieillissement par immersion, lesquels sont présentés dans le Tableau 1. La détérioration du CR est d'autant plus importante que le changement des propriétés du caoutchouc est grand.

Les huiles
La PAO est du n-déc-1-ène catalysé par processus Ziegler et a une viscosité de 8 centistokes à 100 C.
L'huile naphténique est une huile de coupe de distillation directe raffinée au solvant ayant une viscosité de 130 centistokes à 40 C.
L'huile paraffinique des Exemples C, D et H est une huile neutre de type solvant ayant une viscosité de 500 SUS à 100 F. L'huile paraffinique des Exemples I, J et K est une huile extraite au solvant ayant subi un hydrotraitement dont la viscosité est de 650 SUS à 100 F.
Le DOS est un mélange de dérivés d'acide sébacique en C8 ayant une viscosité d'environ 2 centistokes à 100 C.
L'ester synthétique est un ester polymère de

viscosité élevée, ayant une viscosité de 115 centistokes à 40 C.
La compatibilité de l'huile de base pour graisse avec le CR dépend du type et du procédé de raffinage de l'huile. Le Tableau 1 montre que l'huile naphténique (échantillon A) provoque une grande augmentation de volume et une grande réduction de dureté du CR. Une analyse chimique montre que l'huile naphténique a été absorbée dans le caoutchouc et, malgré la perte de plastifiant,-conduit à une grande augmentation du volume du CR et à une grande réduction correspondante de la dureté. L'addition de 10 % de DOS a pour effet d'empirer les résultats (échantillon B).
L'huile paraffinique (échantillon C) a peu d'effet sur la dureté du CR et le changement de volume puisque la perte de plastifiant est compensée par l'absorption d'huile bien que ceci dépende de la viscosité de l'huile et de son procédé de raffinage. L'addition de 10 % de DOS (échantillon D) conduit à une augmentation de volume et à une diminution de dureté, comme on l'a vu pour l'huile naphténique, mais, tout bien considéré, n'affecte pas significativement la compatibilité avec le CR.
La PAO (échantillon E) a un effet opposé à celui de l'huile naphténique en ce ~sens qu'elle provoque une augmentation de la dureté du CR et une grande réduction de volume. L'analyse chimique montre que la PAO extrait les plastifiants et d'autres agents protecteurs dans le CR sans être elle-même absorbée dans le CR, ce qui conduit à une détérioration du caoutchouc. L'addition de 10 % de DOS (échantillon F) améliore les résultats dans une certaine mesure.
On sait que les esters synthétiques provoquent un

gonflement et une perte de dureté du CR (échantillon G), et ont sur le CR un effet similaire à celui des huiles naphténiques, c'est-à-dire augmentent le volume et diminuent la dureté.
L'échantillon H montre qu'une quantité excessive d'huile naphténique dans le mélange (c'est-à-dire 30 % ou plus) peut provoquer un gonflement trop important.
Les échantillons 1 à K montrent les effets de divers mélanges d'huile tels que spécifiés dans les Tableaux 2 et 3 ci-dessous. On verra que le changement net de volume et de dureté peut être minimisé par mélange de différentes huiles de base avec un plastifiant, les meilleurs résultats étant représentés par l'échantillon 1 qui est un mélange d'huiles paraffinique et naphténique avec du DOS. Toutefois, on a trouvé qu'il est nécessaire d'incorporer une PAO dans l'huile de base pour combattre les effets du MoDTP dans la graisse complètement formulée, qui provoque un gonflement et un ramollissement du CR. Ainsi, en pratique, le résultat le plus utilisable est la combinaison d'huile de l'échantillon K, qui comprend une huile naphténique, une huile paraffinique, une PAO et du sébaçate de dioctyle.
Pour une graisse complètement formulée, les taux de diffusion des huiles dans le CR permettent de contrôler la compatibilité de la graisse avec le CR, telle que mesurée par les changements de volume et de dureté.
Toutefois, il faut déterminer les effets chimiques des additifs en mesurant les changements des propriétés mécaniques, c'est-à-dire la résistance à la traction et l'allongement, après vieillissement.
Afin d'illustrer l'invention, on a réalisé divers échantillons de graisse avec les constituants indiqués

dans les Tableaux 2 et 3. Les pourcentages des constituants sont en poids de la graisse totale, à l'exception des constituants de la combinaison d'huile de base qui sont indiqués entre crochets et sont en pourcentage en poids du total de cette combinaison. Ces huiles sont celles décrites ci-dessus, l'huile paraffinique étant celle utilisée dans les Exemples I, J et K.

On mesure les changements de dureté du côté air et du côté graisse ainsi que la température de transition vitreuse. La quantité de détérioration du CR est d'autant plus grande et la compatibilité aux températures élevées empire d'autant que le changement de dureté est important. La performance du caoutchouc aux basses températures est d'autant meilleure que la température de transition vitreuse est basse. Afin que le soufflet ait une ténacité aux basses températures satisfaisante après vieillissement, il est nécessaire que la température de transition vitreuse du CR reste aussi basse que possible.
On évalue certains des échantillons de graisse par rapport au CR étalon avant et après vieillissement sur un seul côté pendant 70 heures à 120 C. On mesure les changements de dureté du côté air et du côté graisse ainsi que la température de transition vitreuse. La quantité de détérioration du CR est d'autant plus grande et la compatibilité aux températures élevées empire d'autant que le changement de dureté est important. La performance du caoutchouc aux basses températures est d'autant meilleure que la température de transition vitreuse est basse. Afin que le soufflet ait une ténacité aux basses températures satisfaisante après vieillissement, il est nécessaire que la température de transition vitreuse du CR reste aussi basse que possible.
On évalue certains des échantillons de graisse par des tests de vieillissement en immersion complète avec le CR étalon pendant 168 heures à 100 C.
On test le frottement statique et dynamique et l'usure sur tous les échantillons. Le dispositif utilisé pour réaliser ces tests est le dispositif de test Optimol Instruments SRV (Schwingungen Reibung Verschliess). Le test comprend un échantillon supérieur sous forme de bille réalisant un mouvement de va-et-vient sous charge

sur un échantillon inférieur en forme de disque plat, la graisse lubrifiant le contact. Il s'agit d'un test standard dans l'industrie, et il convient en particulier au test de graisses pour joints DC.
On identifie une série de méthodes de test utilisant le dispositif de test SRV qui conviennent pour tester des graisses à utiliser dans des joints à double cardan. Dans ce cas, on utilise les conditions suivantes :

Ainsi, l'échantillon 4, qui ne met en #uvre l'invention, ne contient ni l'agent modifiant le frottement exempt de soufre, ni le DOS, ni PAO.
L'échantillon 5 n'a ni le DOS ni le MoDTP. L'échantillon 6 n'a ni le MoDTP ni DOS mais contient un ester polymère de viscosité élevée. L'échantillon 7 a les esters et l'agent modifiant le frottement exempt de soufre mais n'a pas le MoDTP. L'échantillon 8 a un additif anti-usure contenant du bore qui donne un petit chiffre d'usure mais un coefficient de frottement relativement élevé. Les échantillons 7 et 8 ont plus de DOS que ce qui est optimal, si bien que la dureté de la graisse diminue dans une mesure inacceptable.
Les échantillons dans le Tableau 3, ont la combinaison d'huile de base requise, le MoDTP, le ZDTP, l'agent modifiant le frottement exempt de soufre et les autres additifs, et offrent d'excellents résultats d'usure et de frottement, ainsi que des petits chiffres pour la détérioration du caoutchouc. Tous les chiffres d'usure sont inférieurs à 500 mm3/m, valeur considérée comme la limite supérieure pour qu'une graisse soit satisfaisante.
Les autres esters mentionnés ci-dessus peuvent remplacer le DOS.
La Figure 1 illustre les forces axiales comparatives générées par un joint tripode plongeant sous divers angles d'articulation. L'échantillon de graisse 4, qui n'est pas conforme à l'invention, a des performances bien pires que celles de l'échantillon de graisse 10, qui met en #uvre l'invention.
Par conséquent, en résumé, la graisse selon l'invention a une très bonne compatibilité avec le CR

utilisé dans des soufflets de JDC tout en offrant en même temps d'excellentes propriétés de frottement et d'usure pour le JDC lui-même et de faibles forces axiales de troisième ordre dans des joints plongeants.
Bien entendu, l'invention n'est pas limitée aux exemples de réalisation ci-dessus décrits et représentés, à partir desquels on pourra prévoir d'autres modes et d'autres formes de réalisation, sans pour autant sortir du cadre de l'invention.
Claims (1)
- 30 % d'une ou plusieurs huiles naphténiques, le reste de la combinaison étant constitué d'une ou plusieurs huiles paraffiniques, les pourcentages étant en poids de la combinaison d'huile de base totale et le rapport du poids du ou des esters dans la combinaison au poids de la ou des poly(a- oléfines) s'y trouvant n'étant pas supérieur à 1/3 ; b. entre 2 et 15 % en poids, par rapport à la graisse totale, d'un épaississant de type savon de lithium ; c. entre 1 et 5 % en poids, par rapport à la graisse totale, d'un dithiophosphate de molybdène répondant à la formule générale suivante :dans laquelle X ou Y représente S ou 0 et R1 à R4 inclus peuvent être identiques ou différents et représentent chacun un groupe alkyle primaire (à chaîne droite) ou secondaire (à chaîne ramifiée) ayant entre 1 et 24 atomes de carbone ou un groupe aryle ayant entre 6 et 30 atomes de carbone ; d. entre 1 et 5 % en poids, par rapport à la graisse totale, d'un dialkyltidhiophosphate de zinc répondant à la formule générale suivante : (R50) (R6O) SP-S-Zn-S-PS(OR7) (OR8) dans laquelle R5 à R8 inclus peuvent être identiques<Desc/Clms Page number 20>ou différents et représentent chacun un groupe alkyle primaire ou secondaire ayant de 1 à 24 et de préférence de 3 à 8 atomes de carbone ; e. entre 1 et 5 % en poids, par rapport à la graisse totale, d'un agent modifiant le frottement exempt de soufre ; et f. tout ou partie des additifs pour graisse normaux tels que des antioxydants, des inhibiteurs de corrosion, des additifs extrême pression, et des agents de pégosité.2. Graisse selon la revendication 1, caractérisée en ce que le rapport du poids du ou des esters au poids de la ou des poly(a-oléfines) est d'environ 1/4.3. Graisse selon la revendication 1 ou 2, caractérisée en ce que le pourcentage de dithiophosphate molybdène est entre 1 et 2 %.4. Graisse selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que le pourcentage d'alkyldithiophosphate de zinc est entre 1 et 2 %.5. Graisse selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que le pourcentage d'agent modifiant le frottement exempt de soufre est entre 1 et 2 %.6. Graisse selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que l'ester organique synthétique est un dérivé d'acide dicarboxylique avec des sous-groupes à base d'alcools aliphatiques.<Desc/Clms Page number 21>7. Graisse selon la revendication 6, caractérisée en ce que l'acide dicarboxylique est l'acide sébacique et les alcools ont des chaînes carbonées primaires, droites ou ramifiées ayant de 2 à 20 atomes de carbone.8. Graisse selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que l'agent modifiant le frottement exempt de soufre est un complexe organique du molybdène.9. Graisse selon la revendication 8, caractérisée en ce que le complexe organique du molybdène est un complexe d'un amide organique.10. Graisse selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que le dithiophosphate de molybdène est du phosphorodithioate d'oxymolybdène-2- éthylhexyle sulfurisé.11. Graisse selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que le dialkyldithiophosphate de zinc est un mélange d'alkyldithiophosphates primaires et secondaires ou entièrement secondaires dont les chaînes carbonées ont entre 3 et 14 atomes.12. Graisse selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce qu'elle comprend entre 0,50 et 3 % en poids, par rapport à la graisse totale, d'un sel sulfonate de calcium servant d'inhibiteur de corrosion.<Desc/Clms Page number 22>13. Graisse selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 11, caractérisée en ce qu'elle comprend un sel calcique d'un sulfonate aromatique substitué servant d'inhibiteur de corrosion.14. Graisse selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce qu'elle comprend un ou plusieurs additifs contenant du soufre et du phosphore et exempts de métal servant d'additifs extrême pression en une quantité entre 0,1 et 3 % en poids par rapport à la graisse totale, cet additif contenant entre 15 et 35 % en poids de soufre et entre 0,5 et 3 % en poids de phosphore.15. Graisse selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce qu'elle comprend une amine aromatique servant d'antioxydant.16. Graisse selon la revendication 15, caractérisée en ce que l'amine est présente en une quantité entre 0,1 et 2 % en poids par rapport aux constituants totaux de la graisse, et est une phényl-a-naphtylamine.
