Abstract
An optical coin tester is used in which the coin (5) is illuminated by a light source (1) and an image of the coin is formed on a detector (3) by a lens (2). A mask (6) is interposed in the light beam having transparent and opaque parts in the form of the reflected image of a coin of the denomination being checked, either positive or negative; the mask is mounted directly on the face of the lens (2) which is pref. plano-convex. Selected parts of the coin may be used for the check by the use of a set of light guides. The coin is rotated about its centre and if identical to the reference coin, will reach a point of congruence at which the detector will give an accept signal; if no congruence is detected the coin will be rejected.
