Abstract

Sodium sulphur type battery has the solid electrolyte tube lined over its entire internal surface with a felt of graphite or carbon to ensure permanent contact with the sodium at any level in the tube. The graphite felt is supported in place by springs or expanded metal, made of stainless steel, Inconel or molybdenum. The graphite is resistant to attack by the molten sodium. The cell can be operated in positions other than the vertical. The cell contains a cathode reservoir contg. a reactive cathode liquid selected from S,P,Se and their alkaline salts. The solid electrolyte is of beta-Al2O3.
