Abstract
A cylindrical cathodic container (2) of stainless steel or of low temperature coefficient of expansion steel is lined with graphite impregnated with sulphur to function as a current collector. The container (2) is sealed at its upper end by an alpha alumina disc (6) and holds a material which can either be sulphur, phosphorus, sodium or an alkaline salt and which is liquid at the operating temperature. The cell has a cylindrical anodic container (8), of the same diameter and material as the cathodic container (2), sealed as the cathodic container and containing liquid sodium. The disc (6) has a hole (10) and holds a tube (12) of alkaline beta alumina containing the anodic reactive, the joint between the tube (12) and disc being sealed by glass (4) which acts as an insulator.
