Abstract
1456073 Solid electrolyte cells NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 17 Feb 1975 [18 Feb 1974] 7369/74 Heading H1B An electrolytic cell comprises a lithium or lithium alloy anode 16, a ceramic electrolyte 20, a cathode 22 formed of a chalcogen and a lithium ion containing salt 18 between the anode and the electrolyte. The chalcogen is preferably sulphur and the electrolyte, which forms a container for the salt 18, is #-alumina, #<SP>11</SP>-alumina, Li 4 SiO 4 or Li 4 TiO 4 . The lithium anode is contained in an inverted tube 14 and the salt 18 is a mixture of LiCl, LiI and KI. A cylinder 24 of carbon felt forms the cathode current collector and the tube 14 is coated with insulating material such as alumina to prevent lithium collecting on its surface during recharging. The cell is electrically heated to a temperature of about 350‹ C. and the salt 18 may be immobilized by a filler such as calcium zirconate.
