Abstract

1378584 Electrochemical cell UNION CARBIDE CORP 29 Sept 1972 [1 Oct 1971] 44955/72 Heading H1B An alkaline zinc-manganese dioxide electro chemical cell comprises mercury in an amount less than 8% based on the weight of the zinc anode and diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol or polyethylene glycol of average molecular weight 190 to 7000, or an ether or ester thereof. The glycol is preferably methoxy polyethylene glycol having a molecular weight from 525 to 575. The cell may be a nickel-plated steel can within which is a tubular cathode of particulate manganese dioxide and carbon. The inside of the cathode is lined with non-woven cellulosic fabric acting as a separator. An anodic electrolyte gel consisting of powdered zinc, mercury aqueous potassium hydroxide and carboxymethyl cellulose is placed within the separator and a tubular brass collector provided in the gel. The anode may alternatively be massive zinc, pressed powdered zinc or zinc plated on another metal. The glycol may be used to prewet the separator before addition of the electrolyte or added directly to the zinc during production of the gel. It is stated that the glycol migrates to the zinc surfaces as the cell comes to equilibrium and thereby prevents amalgamation.
