Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain hydrogen stably over a long period of time with low voltage by disposing at least one of the anode and cathode of an electrolytic cell for electrolysis of water via porous layers of a specific material press-stuck to the surfaces of a cation exchange embrane segmenting both electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Porous layers made by either heating or press-sticking the molten metallic oxide, conductive material hydrogel of hydroxide or oxide of metals having gas and liquid permeability are formed on the surfaces of a cation exchange membrane. Electrodes are disposed via such porous layers having no electrode activity. Since the gases generated during electrolysis are prevented from generating at the contact interface of the membrane and the electrodes, troubles such as partial blistering of the membrane and the degradation in membrane performance are prevented. The cell voltage can be fairly dropped. Molten oxides of periodic table IV-A group, IV-B group, iron group, Al, Cr or Mn are preferable for the molten metallic oxide.
