Abstract
Sodium sulphur type battery has the solid electrolyte tube contacted on either surface with felts of graphite or carbon to ensure permanent contact between the cathode and anode electrolytes, whatever the level in the cell. The graphite felts are supported in place by means of springs or expanded metal, made of stainless steel, Inconel or molybdenum, pref. Mo inside the tube. The graphite is resistant to attack by the cathode and anode liquids. The cell can be operated in positions other than vertical. The cathode liquid may be S, P, Se of one of their alkaline salts. The solid electrolyte is beta-Al2O3. The anode reservoir is made in Al.
