Abstract

Cpds of formula (I): (where gps A are independently C or N; B = H when A = C, or is a second bond when A = N; R = alkyl, alkeny l or alkynyl (1-6C), phenyl opt. substd. with >=1 of OH, OCH3, NH2, CH3, CF3, NO2, alkylamino, m, F, Cl, Br, Cn, COOH or sulphonic acid; aralkyl opt. substd. as for phenyl, or a heterocyclic gp. e.g. nitrofuryl; R1 and R'1 = H, or as signified for phenyl substits). Prepn. of cpds (I; A=N) is by diazotisation of cpd (II): in polar solvent at -5 to +5 degrees C. Cpds. (I; A = C) are prepd. by reacting (II) in e.g. monomethyleneglycol/2N H2SO4 with a cpd. RCHO and refluxing. Cpds. (I; A = C; A = N) are prepd by reacting (II) with RCHO followed by diazotisation. Cpds (I) have chemotherapeutic activity, esp. against Gram- + ve bacteria.
