Abstract

Penicillin amides prepared by reaction of a penicillanic acid with an amine of formula (I) (where R1 = H, a metal or a lower alkyl group and R2 = H or OH) are new. Antibacterials. The amides are more active against bacteria than the penicillin starting material, and they are more resistant to attack by penicillinases. Suitable starting materials include penicillin G, phenoxyalkyl penicillins, those having a broad spectrum of activity such as ampicillin, and those resistant to bacterial penicillinases such as isoxazolylpenicillins. The reaction is effected at ambient temperature in two stages, in the first the penicillin-amine salt is prepared and, in the second, dehydration is effected in the presence of dicyclohexyl carbodiimide.
