Abstract

A carton primarily intended for eggs is made from a single blank which comprises a panel 16 forming transverse partitions, side panels 18 and 28, bottom panels 20 and 26, panels 22, 24 forming an inverted V-shaped longitudinal partition and a cover panel 30. (Fig. 1 shows a blank 10 separable along a line 38 to form two similar cartons.) The blank is folded about interrupted score lines 56, 561 and a tab 14 is secured to an adhesive layer 44 to produce a carton in flat form, from which the carton is erected as shown in Fig. 5. Intermediate transverse partition 84 is provided with slots 174 and 176 (not shown) and partitions 86 with slots 1741 and 1761 into which pass tongues 288 and s288 (not shown) and 2881 and s2881 (not shown) respectively formed on the longitudinal partition. This engagement and a suitable cutting and scoring of the longitudinal partition causes a splaying apart of the panels 22, 24 in the neighbourhood of the intermediate transverse partitions 84, 86. End transverse partition 82 is caused to bow outwardly of the carton by providing oblique fold lines 881, 901 about which it is folded from panel 16 the partition is held by tongues 2381, s2381 at the adjacent end of the longitudinal partition. End transverse partition 80 is caused to bow similarly. The carton is strengthened against vertical compression by feet 214, 2141 (not shown) and 216, 2161, Fig. 6, which are downward extensions of end portions of the longitudinal partition and feet 230 and 2301 (not shown) and 232, 2321, which are downward extensions of the intermediate splayed portions of the longitudinal partition. In a second embodiment the tongue and slot connections between the intermediate transverse partitions and longitudinal partition are modified so that the tongues are directed towards the centre cells and the end transverse partitions are scored to fold outwardly rather than to bow outwardly (Fig. 10, not shown). Alternative shapes for the transverse partitions are also described.
