[Class 18] A cardboard cell-forming element for a box comprises a strip having a slit 17, the strip being scored along lines 14 extending towards one another from the ends of the slit 17 and also along at least one line 20 across the slit, whereby part of the strip may be folded to form a cell. The score lines 14 extending from the ends of the slit may meet to form a rectangular cell, or may be joined by lines 18 to form a hexagonal cell. Margins 25 may be defined by score lines along the edges of the strip. The margins 25 may be secured to walls of a blank 40 forming a box, Fig. 11, the folding of the blank forming the cells in the inset, or the margins 25 may join a pair of insets together. An inset scored to produce hexagonal cells, may be folded at right angles on the score lines 20 to produce rectangular cells, as seen in plan, Fig. 4. Two such insets 1, 11 may be secured together by their upper faces to form rectangular cells in the transverse direction, Fig. 13. Two insets, scored and slitted for more than one cell may be secured face to face by their margins 25, with the slits of one lying midway between those of the other, the cell-forming portions of each being depressed to engage, by means of notches formed therein, those of the other inset, Fig. 16. The slit 17 may be curved, have offset portions, or may have further slits at its ends. Panels of a carton may be cut and scored as shown in Fig. 3 to provide a carton with transverse partitions.
