Abstract

The thermoplastic constituent of a moulding composition for the manufacture of gramophone records comprises a pinewood resin which is substantially insoluble in petroleum hydrocarbons, together with polyvinyl acetate and a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate. The vinyl polymers are each preferably employed in smaller proportions by weight than the pinewood resin. The composition will usually contain a filler and pigment such as slate powder and carbon black. Plasticizers and waxes, not exceeding 10% and 5% respectively of the resinous mixture, may also be added, e.g., triphenyl phosphate, p-toluene sulphonamide and cyclohexyl phthalate, and carnauba wax. Lead and calcium stearates are also specified as stabilizing ingredients. Shellac in virgin or scrap form may be mixed with the composition. Suitable pinewood resins are those sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Vinsol," and that known as "Solo."
