Abstract
The thermoplastic constituent of a gramophone record comprises a proportion of a pinewood resin, which is substantially insoluble in petroleum hydrocarbons, and a smaller proportion of benzyl cellulose or a mixture of benzyl cellulose and ethyl cellulose. The pinewood resin may be the material sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Vinsol," and there may be used two to three parts by weight of the resin to one part of benzyl cellulose. Fillers, pigments such as carbon black, shellac, scrap from shellac or ethyl cellulose records and mould lubricants such as carnauba wax, microcrystalline paraffin wax or calcium stearate may be included in the composition. Plasticizers such as castor oil may be included. In an example, a gramophone record is made from a composition comprising 22 parts by weight of pinewood resin, insoluble in petroleum hydrocarbons, 8 parts of benzyl cellulose, 65 parts of a filler such as slate powder or limestone and 4.5 parts of mould lubricant and pigment. The record may be made wholly of the resin-benzyl cellulose composition or the composition may be used to form the surface layer of a laminated record.
