Abstract

A synthetic resin composition comprises a filler and a binder containing one or more coumarone resins melting between 70 DEG and and 150 DEG C., a gelled vegetable oil and a plasticized polyvinyl resin, the last-mentioned resin forming a separate phase having a ramiform structure. The polyvinyl resin may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride or vinyl acetate plasticized with tricresyl phosphate or dibutyl phthalate. The coumarone resin may be a coumarone-indene or coumarone-styrene resin and the composition may also comprise a naphthalene-formaldehyde resin and an aromatic petroleum extract. The filler may be asbestos or powdered limestone. A composition suitable for making tiles comprises 1 to 10 per cent plasticized polyvinyl resin, 20 to 30 per cent coumarone resin, 1 to 5 per cent gelled vegetable oil, the remainder of the composition comprising fillers with or without pigments.
