Abstract

A thermoplastic composition suitable for use in the manufacture of floor and wall coverings comprises filler material in admixture with a substantially single-phase resinous binder which comprises (a) a coumarone resin and (b) polyisobutylene and/or a rubbery copolymer of isobutylene with isoprene or butadiene and/or some other rubbery polymer of a mono-olefine or copolymer of a mono-olefine with a di-olefine, the weight of constituent (b) present being not more than 25% of the weight of constituent (a) present. The coumarone resin may be polycoumarone or a coumarone-styrene or coumarone-indene resin. The other rubbery polymer may be a copolymer of isobutylene with piperylene or dimethyl-butadiene or atactic polypropylene. The filler may be powdered limestone and/or asbestos fibres and the composition may contain other materials such as a petroleum resin, a resinous polymer of cyclopentadiene, a naphthalene-formaldehyde resin, bitumen or pitch, and may also contain a pigment such as titanium dioxide.
