Abstract

A hydrocarbon-resistant solvent-activated adhesive comprises a solution, for example in equal parts of toluene and ethyl methyl ketone, of a mixture containing (1) an elastomer such as a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer or a polyethylor other alkyl-acrylate, (2) a phenol-aldehyde or other thermosetting resin, and (3) a thermoplastic resin such as polyvinyl chloride with or without minor amounts of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride, a paracoumarone-indene resin, or an ester-gum such as the glycerol ester of a pine wood resin, or a mixture of such thermoplastic resins. The adhesive may contain fillers such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate and aluminium hydroxide, a plasticizer such as dibutyl or dioctyl phthalate, an antioxidant such as polymerized trimethyl dihydroquinoline.
