Abstract

Thermoplastic resins are plasticized with 10 to 90% (by weight of the plasticized resin) of a complex ester obtained by esterifying 1 mole of pentaerythritol with 0.2 to 0.8 moles of a C4-10 saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and 2.4 to 3.6 moles of a C4-9 saturated aliphatic monocarboxyli acid. Such esters are described and claimed in Specification 915,161. The esters may be used in combination with other plasticizers e.g. dioctyl or dibutyl phthalate or tricresylphosphate. Resins specified are vinyl chloride polymers and copolymers, e.g. with vinyl acetate; polymers of vinyl benzoate, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate and vinylidene chloride; cellulose acetate and nitrate; and ethyl and benzyl cellulose. In examples various esters are added to (Example 9) a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer containing a barium-cadmium soap, an organic phosphate and stearic acid and (Example 11) a solution of cellulose nitrate in a mixture of butyl acetate, toluene, ethanol and butanol from which plasticized films are cast.
