Abstract

The process of Specification 721,706 is modified so as to render completely non-inflammable polyester or polystyrene resins or polyesterstyrene copolymers by using the hexahaloethane or like compound is used in an amount not exceeding 10 per cent of the total weight of the reaction mixture together with not more than 15 per cent by weight of one or more non-halogenated combustion inhibitors. Specified resins are a glyptal resin cross-linked by styrene, and styrene-dialkyl phthalate copolymer. Specified non-halogenated combustion inhibitors are antimony oxide, a soluble antimony compound yielding antimony oxide, and an organic phosphate, e.g. tricresyl phosphate. The inhibitors may be added at the resin monomer stage, and the final polymerization preferably executed in the presence of benzoyl peroxide.
