Abstract

A polymerization catalyst-containing pack for use in the polymerization of styrene or a composition thereof (e.g. with a plasticizer). comprises one or more organic peroxy catalysts in a sealed container at least part being of polystyrene and of such thickness (e.g. 0.3 mm) that when used the polystyrene part dissolves at room temperature in the styrene or composition thereof and/or reacts with the peroxy compound so that the catalyst is liberated. The pack is preferably wholly of polystyrene but alternatively may be made such that the lower portion is of a material resistant to attack by the catalyst contained therein and the upper portion is of polystyrene. Specified catalysts are dry benzoyl peroxide and pastes of cyclohexanone peroxide in tricresyl phosphate or dibutyl phthalate.
