Abstract

Impact-resistant polystyrene is produced by polymerizing a solution of polybutadiene in styrene containing 2 to 20%, by weight of the styrene, of polybutadiene, the polybutadiene being one which contains at least 80% by weight of the 1,4-cis-isomer. The monomer-polymer solution may be polymerized in bulk or in suspension in water with the aid of peroxide catalysts. Also present in the polymerizable material may be softening agents and lubricants, e.g. butyl and cyclohexyl stearates, dioctyl phthalate, bone oil and soya bean oil.
