Abstract

A condenser is enclosed by moulding within a polymerised hard solid body formed by copolymerisation of a mixture of materials including an aromatic monomer having a side-chain of the vinyl or substituted vinyl type, the moulding material being such that it will polymerise and set with the application of heat to form a hard body within a time period of, at most, three hours at a temperature between 100 DEG C. and 135 DEG C. The moulding mixture may comprise a styrene monomer with a divinyl benzene monomer or a nuclear substituted halogenated styrene monomer, such as a nuclear dichlorostyrene monomer, or a mixture of all three monomers. Alternatively, the mixture comprises an aromatic monomer and an acrylic monomer. In addition, the moulding material may include one or more polymers of aromatic monomers, for example, polystyrene or polydichlorostyrene, a plasticizer such as a hydrogenated terphenyl, and a filler such as talc or chalk. The time taken for polymerisation may be reduced by the inclusion of an accelerator. Specifications 679,539 and 705,521, [Group XXXVI], are referred to.
