Abstract

Mouldable rubber-containing compositions are obtained by polymerizing a mixture of a styrene and methyl methacrylate in the presence of a diene synthetic rubber which constitutes at least 5% by weight of the final product, and subjecting the product so obtained to a hot rolling or mastication treatment. Rubbers specified are butadiene-styrene copolymers and polychloroprene. Styrenes specified are styrene itself, alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl toluene and chlorostyrenes. The polymerization may be carried out with the rubber in solution in the monomer mixture, in solution in a common solvent with the monomer mixture, or in dispersion. In the example a butadiene-styrene rubber is dissolved in a mixture of styrene and methyl methacrylate and subjected to prepolymerization until the mixture contains 30% polymer, the resulting dope, with the admixture of lauroyl and benzoyl peroxides, is dispersed in water with the aid of polyvinyl alcohol and the polymerization is completed. The resulting product is milled at a temperature of 160 DEG C. Specification 893,084 is referred to.
