Abstract

Vulcanizable compositions comprise a natural or synthetic rubber and from 0.1 to 10 per cent by weight of the rubber of a vinyl pyridine polymer. Specified vinyl pyridines are 2-vinyl-pyridine, 3-vinyl pyridine, 4-vinyl pyridine, 2 - methyl - 5 - vinyl pyridine, 2 - methyl - 5 - vinyl pyridine, 6-methyl-2-vinyl pyridine, 2,3,4-trimethyl-5-vinyl pyridine and 3-ethyl-5-vinyl pyridine. Copolymers of the vinyl pyridines with styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate and butadiene-1,3 may be used. The polymerization of the vinyl pyridine may be effected in aqueous emulsions using polyethylene glycol mono-stearate as emulsifying agent and a ,a 1-azodiisobutyronitrile as catalyst. Suitable rubbers are natural rubber and diene polymers and copolymers, e.g. butadiene 1,3-styrene and butadiene 1,3-acrylonitrile copolymers. In the examples, 2-vinyl pyridine is polymerized in aqueous emulsion using a ,a 1-azo-diisovaleronitrile as catalyst. The examples describe the vulcanization of butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber in the presence of zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur, dibenzthiazyldisulphide, reinforcing fillers, e.g. aluminium silicate, silica and carbon black, and poly-(4-vinyl pyridine), poly-(2-vinyl pyridine) or poly-(2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine).
