Abstract
A closed cell rubbery material is produced by heating in a closed mould a natural and/or synthetic rubber, from 20 to 60 per cent of a thermoplastic synthetic resin, a vulcanizing agent and a blowing agent, releasing the composition from the mould and allowing it to expand, then compressing the composition at a temperature not less than the softening-point of the resin in at least one direction so as to increase the density, and cooling under pressure to below the softening-point of the resin. Specified synthetic rubbers are the polymers of butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl butadiene, 1,3-dimethylbutadiene, piperylene and chlorobutadiene, and the copolymers with each other or with isobutylene, styrene, methyl styrene, metachlorostyrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, alpha-chloracrylonitrile, methyl, ethyl and butyl acrylates, methyl and ethyl methacrylates, 2-vinyl pyridine, and the terpolymer butadiene-styrene-acrylonitrile as well as rubbery olefin polysulphide polymers, e.g. "Thiokol" (Registered Trade Mark). Specified resins are copolymers of the above dienes with styrene, methyl styrene, chloro- and dichloro styrenes, methoxy styrene, 1-vinyl-2-chloronaphthalene, vinyl pyridine, 5-ethyl (or -methyl)-2-vinyl-pyridine, 4,6-dimethyl-2-vinyl-pyridine, methyl or butyl methacrylate, and methyl ethacrylate. Other specified synthetic resins are styrene-isobutylene, alkyl methacrylate-acrylic acid ester or ethyl acrylate, and vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymers plasticised with dioctyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate. Specified blowing agents are p-p-oxybisphenylene sulphonyl hydrazine diazamino benzene, N,N1-dinitroso pentamethylene tetramine, sodium bicarbonate and silicon oxyhydride. The usual rubber compounding agents may also be present.ALSO:A closed cell rubbery material is produced by heating in a closed mould a natural rubber or a mixture with a synthetic rubber, from 20-60 per cent of a thermoplastic synthetic resin, a vulcanizing agent and a blowing agent, releasing the composition from the mold and allowing to to expand, then compressing the composition at a temperature not less than the softening point of the resin in at least one direction so as to increase the density and cooling under pressure to below the softening point of the resin. Specified flowing agents are p-p1-oxybisphenyl-ene sulphonyl hydrazine, diazoaminobenzene, N-N1-dinitroso pentamethylene tetramine, sodium bicarbonate and silicon oxyhydride. The usual rubber compounding agents may be present.
