Abstract

A closed cell thermoplastic gas-expanded material comprises a vulcanized intimate uniform mixture of (A) a blend of a polyvinyl chloride resin and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer rubber, and (B) an ABS polymer. Portion (A) may comprise 20 to 80% of polyvinyl chloride resin and preferably 40%. The polyvinyl chloride resin may be polyvinyl chloride itself or a copolymer with e.g. vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride or diethyl maleate or a mixture of polyvinyl chloride with polyvinyl acetate. The copolymer rubber may be partly or entirely cross-linked or high-gel rubber. The ABS polymer generally contains 15 to 30% acrylonitrile, 15 to 40% butadiene and 40 to 60% styrene. It may be a graft polymer of acrylonitrile and styrene or polybutadiene to which additional amounts of styrene-acrylonitrile resin and butadiene-acrylonitril copolymer may be added. Portion (B) may alternatively consist of a physical blend of acrylonitrile-styrene and butadiene acrylonitrile copolymers. A preferred material for (B) is a latex blend of divinylbenzene cross-linked butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, a graft copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile on polybutadiene and a styrene-acrylonitrile resin. Dioctyl phthalate plasticizer may be added. Azodicarbonamide, p,p1-oxybis (benzene-sulphonyl hydraxide) and dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine are suitable blowing agents. Expanded material is obtained by effecting partial cure at 275 DEG to 305 DEG F., sulphur or sulphur-donating agents being present, and then heating forther at 310 DEG to 360 DEG F. to complete the cure and to decompose the blowing agent. Usually this heating is carried out while the material is being calendered into a sheet, e.g. by two passes through a floating platen sponge press, antioxidants and stabilizers e.g. nonyl phenyl phosphite and cadmium stearate may also be added to the mixture. In an example the sheet obtained is heated and moulded to form a baseball cap.ALSO:A baseball cap is obtained by moulding or vacuum-forming a sheet of closed-cell thermoplastic gas-expanded material which comprises a vulcanized intimate uniform mixture of (A) a blend of a polyvinyl chloride resin and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer rubber and (B) an ABS polymer (see Division C3). The expanded material retains its cellular structure.
