Abstract

Gas expanded polymeric materials are prepared by using azo compounds containing at least one azo linkage in sufficient amount to act as both blowing agent and polymerization catalyst without the addition of a further polymerization catalyst. Specified polymeric materials are the polymers or copolymers of styrene, butadiene, acrylonitrile, acrylates and methacrylates while specified azo compounds are azo-diisobutyronitrile, and azo-dicyclohexanoicnitrile. The monomers may be polymerized at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of the azo-compound until solid, granulated or mechanically reduced and then expanded. Plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate, and fillers may also be present.
