Abstract

The process of preparing graft acrylonitrile polymers of the parent Specification is modified in any of the following respects: (1) the polymerization of the mixture of acrylonitrile and a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer is continued until from 70 per cent to less than 90 per cent of the mixture has polymerized; (2) the mixture of monomers consists of from 85 per cent to 99.5 per cent of acrylonitrile and from 15 per cent to 0.5 per cent of two different monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; (3) a vinyl pyridine is employed as a component of the isolated copolymer; and (4) a vinyl pyridine is employed as the monoethylenically unsaturated monomer which is copolymerized with acrylonitrile. If desired polymerization may be carried out by continuous or continuous batch processes as described in Specification 781,437.
