Abstract
The process of preparing graft acrylonitrile polymers of the parent Specification is modified in any of the following respects: (1) in the preparation of the preformed copolymer from the ester and amide monomers, polymerization is continued until from 70 per cent to less than 90 per cent of the monomer mixture has polymerized; (2) the polymerization of the mixture of monomers consisting of from 85.0 per cent to 99.5 per cent of acrylonitrile and from 15.0 per cent to 0.5 per cent of a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer is continued until from 70 per cent to less than 90 per cent of the mixture has polymerized; (3) in the polymerization referred to in (2) above the acrylonitrile is polymerized with two different monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; (4) a vinyl pyridine is employed as a component of the preformed copolymer; and (5) a vinyl pyridine is employed as the monoethylenically unsaturated monomer which is copolymerized with acrylonitrile. If desired polymerization may be carried out by continuous or continuous batch processes as described in Specification 781,437.
